Side by side
| Class 4 shingles | Metal (standing seam / stone-coated) | |
|---|---|---|
| Hail | Top UL 2218 rating for impact. Large hail can still bruise or crack them. | Hard to puncture. Can dent, and dents may count as "cosmetic" under some policies. |
| Insurance credit (Texas) | Class 4 generally earns the largest UL 2218 credit, but it varies by insurer. | Credit depends on whether the specific panel is UL 2218 rated. Ask about cosmetic-damage exclusions. |
| Upfront cost | Lower | Higher, especially standing seam |
| Looks | Traditional, with designer, slate-look and shake-look options | Modern (standing seam) or traditional (stone-coated, metal shingles) |
| Noise | Quiet | Similar to shingles over a solid deck and attic. Louder on open-framed buildings. |
| HOA approval | Usually easy | Varies. Stone-coated and metal shingles often go over better than exposed panels. |
| Upkeep | Inspect after storms | Inspect after storms. Exposed-fastener systems also need screw checks. |
Questions to ask your insurer first
- Do you give a premium credit for UL 2218 roofs? How much for Class 3, and how much for Class 4?
- Does my policy exclude cosmetic hail damage to metal roofs?
- Is my roof covered at replacement cost or actual cash value?
The Texas Department of Insurance says credits for impact-resistant roofs vary by company and that Class 4 generally earns the largest. When we install a qualifying roof, we give you TDI Form PC068 to send your insurer. We can't promise a discount.
Our rule of thumb
- Selling within a few years, or on a tight budget? Class 4 shingles usually make sense.
- Staying long-term, in an open or windy spot, or want the modern look? Standing seam is worth pricing.
- In an HOA that wants a traditional look? Consider stone-coated steel or metal shingles.
- Shop, barn or barndo? Usually R-panel or PBR.
Still undecided? We'll price both on the same visit. Request a free inspection.
